4-6 weeks prior to your move
Start getting organised and prepared for your move – there is a lot to be done!
  1. Try and find out when you will get access to your new property.
  2. If you are renting give formal notice to your landlord/real estate agent of your current rental.
  3. Complete/Organise necessary repairs at current property to make sure you will recoup your bond.
  4. Start cleaning out your entire home including the garage and shed.
  5. Dispose of rubbish.
  6. Collect items (including furniture) you wish to donate in a designated spot.
  7. Return all rented items.
  8. Dispose of no longer needed and out of date medicines at your local chemist.
  9. Start using up freezer meals and open packages of food.
  10. Start researching removalist companies.

  11. Work out how much space your belongings will take up to determine how big a removalist truck you will need. You can calculate your space requirements here.
2-4 weeks prior to your move
Make definite arrangements!
  1. Confirm when you will have access to your new property.
  2. Make sure all renovations/building will be completed on time.
  3. If you haven’t got a new property secured yet or are still building arrange storage for your goods. For information about our storage options please see here.
  4. Book a removalist as soon as possible so you don’t miss out on your preferred day and time with your preferred company.
  5. Apply for leave with your employer for the day of the move.
  6. Arrange a baby sitter for the day of the move.
  7. Arrange for someone to mind your pets for the day of the move.
  8. Organise a cleaning service.
  9. Book a pickup a few days before moving day for goods you wish to donate with a charity of your choice e.g. Vinnies 1300 551 894, 13 SALVOS (13 72 58) and ask for a pick-up from your home.
  10. Organise good quality packing materials.
  11. Start packing! Start with the non-essential, low use items.
  12. Organise home and contents insurance for your new property.

1-2 weeks prior to your move
It’s almost moving time!
  1. Finalise arrangements with your removalist company if you haven’t already done so.
  2. Check if there are any access regulations at your new (and old) property. E.g. Are removalists restricted to certain hours, are there parking restrictions, do you need to book a lift? Please inform your removalist company of any such requirements and bookings asap!
  3. If you realise that you have too much to do before your move contact your removalist service regarding their packing services and organise professional packers.

  5. Make sure you have informed everyone on your change of address list. Download your checklist with all necessary number and online forms here.
  6. Work out a plan where your current furniture will go in your new house. Make sure that it will fit through the doorways to get to its designated spot. Take measurements if necessary.
  7. Fill prescriptions for the busy time around your moving day.
  8. Back up all your computers.
  9. Organise Mail Redirection with Australia Post
  10. Start dismantling outdoor and kids play equipment.
  11. Continue packing and cleaning.
  12. Buy more packing materials if you are already running low.
A few days before your move
Get Ready
  1. Pack up all remaining items in your household.
  2. Pack all your personal items.
  3. Place all your valuables in a safe place, preferably outside your home.
  4. Confirm (again) all your details with your removalist and real estate agent and/or lawyer as applicable.
  5. Pack priority boxes with essential and easy to lose items.
  6. Confirm any last-minute tradesmen and deliveries for your new home are on schedule
  7. Make sure gas and electricity will be connected at your new home before the moving day.
  8. Organise for services to be disconnected at your current address a few days after your move (just in case you need to go back for any reason).
  9. Drain fuel from any garden tools you will be taking with you.
The day before your move
Last minute preparations
  1. Make sure all meters (gas, electricity and water) have been read.
  2. Make sure EVERYTHING is packed.
  3. Make sure that all valuables including but not limited to jewellery, watches, phones, trinkets, precious stones or metals, money, credit cards, wallets, deeds, securities, stamps, coins or goods, collections and identification documents have been securely stored away in a safe place ready to be moved by yourself.
  4. If you are using professional packers they will (most likely) be arriving today. Have a game plan of what your priorities are and exactly what you need them to do.
  5. Give them clear instructions.
  6. Defrost your freezer and empty your fridge.
  7. Drain any appliances that have water in them including garden hoses.
  8. Have a tool kit handy.
  9. Check that utilities are working at your new home (if you already have access).
  10. Check everything is clean and organised at your new home (if you already have access).
  11. Make sure you have your phone (and charger) on you in case someone needs to contact you.
Moving Day
Finally!

At your current home

  1. Make sure that there is adequate parking available for the removalist truck
  2. Show your removalist your current home and all items that need to be moved, explain your plan for furniture placement and layout of your new home.
  3. Clearly point out which items/boxes you need first at your new home so they get loaded last.
  4. Point out any particularly valuable and/or breakable items.
  5. Before leaving your old home make sure nothing has been left behind.
  6. Make sure all taps and lights are turned off, all windows and doors are locked.

At your new home

  1. Make sure that there is adequate parking available for the removalist truck.
  2. Make sure you give the removalist clear instructions where to place each item.
  3. Get the removalist to assemble beds needed on the first night.
  4. Check all items for damages before the removalists leave.
  5. Check that nothing is left in the truck before the removalists leave.
